The flight was long and tiresome! 9 hours from Sao Paulo to Joburg, 2 hours in the airport and then anther 2 hours to Cape Town (CPT). I arrived around noon on Monday, arranged for a shuttle service to the hostel. The first offer was 220 Rands (26$) and another was 140 Rands. It helps to shop around.
Checked into my room and passed out for the next 5 hours. Woke up, had a bite to eat at the hostel and went straight back to bed for the night. Suprisingly, I slept all night - even after my 5 hour power nap.
Tuesday I explored the city by foot. 32 degrees and sun! Gotta love it. Walked around the city Centre, down Long Street - the main street in downtown CPT with shops, cafes and bars. Got back to the hostel and enjoyed the BBQ put on by the staff. Chicken, salads, sausage, ice cream and fruit...a good dinner! Went out to Zula with a couple guys from the hostel - John and Brendan. John is orriginally from Vancouver Island and Brendan is from South Africa and running food and beverage at the hostel. Zula was cool - had live music going on upstairs, kind of like an open mike.
Wednesday I slept in until 10 or so, spent the day walking around the Waterfront. Sauntered through the mall, checked out some shops and bought a book. Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond. Had Thai food for lunch and took a taxi back to the hostel. Had a very chill night which was nice!
Woke up at 06:40 on Thursday to start hiking Table Mountain at 08:00. I am not sure if today was the best day to pick since it was suppose to be the hottest day of the year so far - 38 degrees! In some parts of the country, the mercury passed 46 degrees! The hike was enjoyable and suprisingly not extremely hot. However, the girl I was hiking with was very sick and dizzy for the majority of the way up. Normally it should have taken an hour or so but we took 3 hours to get up. And every minute that passed, it got hotter and hotter!
Went out that night to see 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' I saw it in Argentina but missed the beginning so this time it clarified a few things.
Friday I woke and went for breakfast at 'Slice on Bree' (on Bree Street) just down from the hostel. Went down to Long Street, grabbed an ice coffee on St Georges Market - wrote in my diary and watched people for an hour or so. Went to the aquarium in the afternoon to escape the heat! Saw turtles and manta rays being fed which was very cool. Got some good pictures of Nemo (or his distant relatives) and had a brilliant dinner on the waterfront. I was joined by an Austrian girl whos name I can't remember at this point.
Today I plan to head to the beach - ALL DAY! Find a spot and stay there. Actually, I will probably play some beach volleyball if possible. Apparently, the water is freezing! Even with this heat!
